"with this dynamic book Thomson is big enough to follow the cry of “action!” wherever it leads"

Martin Scorsese recently wrote about the mainstream dominance of Marvel films creating a situation that was “inhospitable to art” — yet, as Thomson points out, The Irishman streamed on Netflix after a brief theatrical release, the platform now the arena of Scorsese’s real competitors. Michelle MacLaren, for example — no flashy auteur but a director “who has done 11 episodes of Breaking Bad, three of The Walking Dead, four Game of Thrones, a Westworld, the pilot for The Deuce and a Morning Show”. Thomson concludes by declaring Ozark’s final four episodes the “essential movie of 2020”. The pictures are smaller, maybe, but with this dynamic book Thomson is big enough to follow the cry of “action!” wherever it leads.
