"I was captivated by this debut, which blends ornithology, travelogue and biography"

Regular readers will know I'm something of a bird enthusiast; I was captivated by this debut, which blends ornithology, travelogue and biography. Meiburg, an American writer and adventurer who also sings in indie rock band Shearwater, charts his obsession with a rare but supremely curious and intelligent bird of prey: the striated caracara. He travels through South America on the trail of this wondrous creature, and also comes to Britain, birthplace of William Henry Hudson, a Victorian naturalist who championed caracaras as an unsung wonder of the natural world. Unsung no longer!
