A gem of a book about the aggravations and joys of cats from a literary master In the autumn of 1965, flush with the unexpected success of his first published books, the Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal bought a weekend cottage in Kersko, about an hour's drive east of Prague. From then until his death, he tended to a community of cats at his country home.

"This is a most strange and tormented story, part psychoanalytic confession and part meditation on man’s cruel relationship with nature"

All My Cats confirms the adage that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Its playful montage of cutely frolicking felines will seduce the unwary cat lover, but really it should carry both a spoiler alert and a trigger warning. It begins with warmth and fluffiness, but soon descends into Dostoevskian horror... This is a most strange and tormented story, part psychoanalytic confession and part meditation on man’s cruel relationship with nature, with the horrors Hrabal lived through – war and totalitarianism – lurking unspokenly in the background.
