AlphaBit (Chronicle Books, RRP£9.99) re-creates the structure of a very different form of old-style entertainment: the 8-bit video game. Juan Carlos Solon’s pictures faithfully reproduce the crude, blocky graphics found in arcade machines and home consoles of the 1980s and 1990s. Each page contains a list of objects for the reader to spot, grouped under a different letter of the alphabet in order. As the pages turn, our elf hero wakes up, gathers comrades and embarks on a quest through a fantasy realm, battling enemies until finally he faces and defeats the end-of-level boss. Adults who played games like this in their youth, and fans of retro gaming in general, will doubtless have great nostalgic fun reading this book with their children.
