"a contemporary visit to one of science fiction’s favourite futures"

A (disconcertingly reasonable) totalitarian empire is using technology to bring all minds into line. Breq, one of its warship AIs, used to operating through hundreds of zombie soldiers, wakes up lost inside a single reanimated corpse. Unpicking what’s happened, never mind avenging such a slight, will require a wholesale reimagining of person, gender and agency. This is a contemporary visit to one of science fiction’s favourite futures: one in which computers (in this case built to prosecute interstellar wars) have control of their human makers.
