In 1971 Mike Hodges directed and wrote the screenplay for Get Carter, a milestone in the history of British noir cinema. He has done a lot since, in films, TV and radio. Now, aged 86, he has written his debut book — in fact two novellas and a long short story. Few of Hodges’s characters are less than louche, many are criminal, offensive and swear a lot. Plots are complex and original. And Hodges has a gift for making the reader read, and smile. That’s important.
