"Bear is a bizarre but strangely uplifting book about a woman’s quest for freedom"

Engel is known as a feminist writer, and you can see how putting a woman alone on an island reflects 1970s separatism: the hypothesis that the only workable solution for women is to live without men, using their bodies for reproduction and occasional pleasure and gardening jobs. For Lou, as for most feminists, this notion soon becomes difficult. After one particularly dicey interaction with her furry friend, she realises that a choice must be made: should she return to normal life?
