"explains the scholarship underlying the exhibition, complemented by more than 300 illustrations"

Bruegel: The Master edited by Elke Oberthaler, Sabine Pénot, Manfred Sellink and Ron Spronk (Thames & Hudson £42), which explains the scholarship underlying the exhibition, complemented by more than 300 illustrations. The meaning of many of Bruegel’s pictures remains obscure and, as the authors point out, he remains a paradox: a painter of people who loved landscapes, a comic artist and a profoundly serious one, a painter of life and death, and a metropolitan figure with an intellectual clientele who was drawn to peasant life.
