An unforgettable, sweeping tale of nineteenth-century China.

"a big, complex and utterly involving portrait of 19th-century China"

This is an old-fashioned book. Edward Rutherfurd, the author of previous doorstoppers such as London and Paris, has no truck with concerns over cultural appropriation, gleefully inhabiting the minds of his Chinese characters. The British imperialists are nuanced, rather than cartoonishly villainish. Bravo; this is a big, complex and utterly involving portrait of 19th-century China.
