The compelling, gorgeously atmospheric tale of female friendship, redemption and betrayal, inspired by the incredible true story of female convicts at sea

" an immensely satisfying read"

Author Hope Adams has skilfully patched a murder mystery into a historical event – the 1841 voyage of the convict ship Rajah from London to Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania), during which the cargo of female prisoners created a quilt for the governor of their new home...

Masterful plotting, well-drawn characters, and a plausible balance of despair for what was left behind and optimism for what lies ahead add up to an immensely satisfying read.

"a fascinating prose patchwork of the women’s lives, stitched together by a twisting murder mystery"

The Rajah was a real ship and the patchwork quilt made on board is now in the National Gallery of Australia. Hope Adams is the pen name of the well-established writer Adèle Geras, who has created a fascinating prose patchwork of the women’s lives, stitched together by a twisting murder mystery. An engrossing and deeply satisfying read.
