A coming of age novel set in early 1970's Norfolk

"an original, disturbing read"

Devoured is constructed in staccato sentences, told using the second person, and our narrator... It’s a style as unconventional as the story — a tumultuous coming-of-age tale set in a hippy commune in deepest Norfolk in the early Seventies, alarmingly based on Mackmin’s childhood experiences... Mackmin captures her pubescent rush of sensation and emotion with moving candour, and achieves a dizzying believability, reminiscent of Eimear McBride’s A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing (discovered by the same publisher). The propulsive rush of the narrative leads you hurtling towards the inevitable implosion of this makeshift community, and the fallout for the children of this “me me me” generation. Mackmin is surefooted as she negotiates between the comedy and tragedy of the tale, and her original voice makes this an absorbing read.
