"To spin a speculative novel out of erotica is a hell of an undertaking, and Szpara carries it off"

People are kept in line with the drug Dociline. The story — a mostly disturbing and occasionally violent homoerotic love affair between master Alex and slave Elisha — ends in a courtroom drama, but that’s no spoiler for a book set entirely “at court”, in boardrooms and ballrooms, executive orgies and high-net-worth BDSM pony races. Erotica is such a devalued currency these days, it is easier to praiseDocile for what it isn’t. It isn’t Fifty Shades (Szpara can write).
