"the book is far smarter and funnier than a tie-in to a major corporate IP has any right to be"

This is a novel based on the recently released live action movie that is in turn based on the Nickelodeon cartoon series Dora the Explorer, and it would appear that the credited author, Steve Behling, working from a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller, has approached his task with tongue firmly in cheek. Several times the book addresses the reader, much as onscreen Dora addresses the viewer, asking him or her to repeat a phrase to show that it has been understood (“Can you say ‘severe neurotoxicity’?”). Thanks to the author’s ironic take on the material, the book is far smarter and funnier than a tie-in to a major corporate IP has any right to be.
