"Earwig is a very curious novel, often at its most satisfying in its smallest physical descriptions"

Earwig is a very curious novel, often at its most satisfying in its smallest physical descriptions, such as that of a stub of pencil hanging on a string near some faded rococo plasterwork. With its mannered and oddly monochrome quality, like some nightmare silent movie, the choreographed physicality would be almost slapstick if it wasn’t so excessively bloody. Set in a coherent claustrophobic world – like the worlds of Gormenghast or Eraserhead, but less charming – it is impressively imagined: fascinating to peer into, though you wouldn’t want to spend much time there.
