"This account brings to life the story of some of the 18,000 Nisei soldiers fighting for the US while facing discrimination at home,"

Yet overall, the author is to be congratulated for bringing to life the story of these “forgotten heroes” of the Second World War, while their families suffered discrimination and humiliation back in the US. The real star of the book, however, is the conscientious objector Gordon Hirabayashi, who refused to register for relocation — on the grounds that it was racially motivated and a breach of his “fundamental rights and civil liberties” — or to be inducted into the armed forces.
