Roose begins one chapter recounting a dinner he attends with a group of tech executives who, amid plates of foie gras, beef tenderloin and glasses of champagne, ask their fellow diners which jobs are believed to be robot-proof. “What could humans do, they asked, that machines wouldn’t eventually do better?”
