An excellent study of how neoliberalism is causing a crisis in Germany.

"Germany in crisis is very like Britain – only better at making cars."

All this would, if I’m honest, have filled me with schadenfreude were it not for the obvious realisation that the social decline Nachtwey describes is ours too. We too have kicked away the ladder and the safety net of the postwar consensus. We too have traded stability for precariousness, dignity for consumer goods, social solidarity for individual materialism. Germany in crisis is very like Britain – only better at making cars.
