"judicious text"

The National Gallery’s current Mantegna and Bellini exhibition is a reminder of just what a sublime and poetic painter the great Venetian Giovanni Bellini (c1430-1516) could be. For those who leave the exhibition wanting more of him, Johannes Grave’s Giovanni Bellini (Prestel £95) mixes large high-quality plates of almost all of his paintings with a judicious text that stresses that whatever the subject of Bellini’s paintings, be they religious scenes, portraits, genre or classical pieces, they are all about the art of concentrated looking — by artist and viewer.
