At first it seems to be about teenage Jude, who, after her mother’s relationship ends, moves to a scruffy seaside house with a sitting tenant. Then it turns into a love story with a strange boy who lives outside normal time. With him, the everyday is heightened and idealised, and Jude learns to appreciate being in the moment while experiencing the grand passion of her life. The language shifts with their shared magical narrative from down-to-earth realism to the lyrical, abstract and philosophical. The sitting tenant, an elderly man who can’t go outdoors, has magical secrets too, while Jude has lessons to learn and a heart-rending choice to make.
