Never before published in the UK: a gripping, masterful alternative history thriller from the author of the Bernie Gunther novels

"this is a welcome gift, and a testament to the storytelling panache of one of Britain’s great thriller writers."

Kerr was evidently enthused by writing about this period of history again, resuscitating Bernie Gunther for his next novel. He would go on to write a further ten in the series, including 2013’s A Man Without Breath, in which Bernie investigates the Katyn massacre on Joseph Goebbels’s orders, giving the other side of the coin to Willard Mayer’s assignment in Hitler’s Peace. But this book is not simply a companion piece to his best-loved work: it’s a rich and intricately plotted thriller that is enjoyable on its own terms. While one can’t help wishing there were more Bernie adventures to comfort us, this is a welcome gift, and a testament to the storytelling panache of one of Britain’s great thriller writers.
