"this is a moving and often lyrical account of a fraught, precarious life"

Synanon and especially Jollett’s early separation from his parents cast a long shadow over this affecting memoir. While much of the book covers standard coming-of-age fare — sibling rivalry, teenage rebellion, first love — it is coloured by the trauma Jollett experienced, which took him years to confront and overcome. He eventually found redemption in music — he is the frontman of the indie band the Airborne Toxic Event. The chapters covering the band’s rise are the least interesting, straying too close to clichéd rock autobiography, and the book suffers from occasional longueurs.
