"(a) dazzling and accomplished collection from the South Korean writer Kim Bo-young"

Kim explores a fully worked-out cosmology, complete with a Fall and a Judgment, in two stories: The Prophet of Corruption and That One Life. Divine “prophets” have divided themselves temporarily into multiple selves, to better acquire earthly wisdom — but one, Aman, resists their reunification. Wisdom, they argue, is personal, not general, and cannot exist without free will. Quite how Kim manages to make such gripping narratives out of the conversations of immortal, sexless, more or less disembodied beings floating around in a timeless limbo will baffle as much as it delights.
