A larger-than-life infantry officer's letters written from the Western Front to his West End actress wife from 1915 to 1917. Visually presented with images of all the letters, and pictures and detailed notes about the people and objects and events he encounters, showing how personal and family and war history connects through to today.

"This first-hand account of Western Front makes for a revelatory, gripping read"

Tatham is an artist as well as a writer, and his 2015 exhibition at the Cloth Hall Museum in Ypres included stained glass portraits of each officer, designed by him, and mural paintings of their family trees. His new book, I Shall Not Be Away Long, draws on the same material as its predecessor, but narrows the focus, concentrating on another officer in the regimental photograph, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Bartlett. He commanded the 8th Royal Berkshires at Loos and the Somme, two of the bloodiest battles of the war, and his letters from the front line provide the text of the new book.
