"Kiernan’s novel has echoes of real-life scandals about undercover cops in illicit relationships"

What starts out as a missing-person case turns into a murder inquiry when blood is found in the home of 55-year-old Debbie Nugent, who lived with her daughter in the Wicklow mountains. The girl falls under suspicion because she is evasive about when she last saw her mother alive, but Sheehan isn’t sure whether she’s guilty or just frightened. Kiernan’s novel has echoes of real-life scandals about undercover cops in illicit relationships, and it is written with an undertone of anger about ruined lives.
