Trina lives in the largely German-speaking Italian region of South Tyrol. In the decades between Mussolini’s seizure of power and 1945, her daughter goes missing and her son becomes a Nazi. During the war she and her husband take refuge in the mountains. They return later to find their community under a new threat. Balzano employs an unpretentious style to explore Trina’s life and wider questions about an individual’s relationship to a particular place.
