Historical novel based on the true story of James Norris, an American marine and inmate of Bedlam, 1800-1815, chained to a stake for fourteen years. One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest meets Mutiny on the Bounty-an exploration of love, sanity, suffering and compassion wrapped into the sensual and lyrical tale of one man's lonely Odyssey.

"Bullock’s story is sometimes confusing, but the voice she gives to Norris ... is a haunting one."

James Norris, the narrator of Bullock’s second novel, is a lost soul, an early 19th-century sailor condemned by madness to incarceration in Bedlam. There he broods on the wrongs done to him by Fletcher Christian, of mutiny on the Bounty fame, a former shipmate who, he believes, betrayed him by seducing the woman he loved, and dreams of revenge. Bullock’s story is sometimes confusing, but the voice she gives to Norris, as memories and delusions meld in his disintegrating mind, is a haunting one.
