"The Nazis’ relationship with music is explored through the life of a Jewish cellist"

Certainly, the sections on music are the strongest... [Goodman] scrupulously “tied this novel to the historical record, and cross-referenced the fiction to factual accounts”. As such, the parts of the novel set in Dachau, Buchenwald, Terezín and Auschwitz ring with a visceral truth, and real figures such as Herbert Zimmer, who established a secret orchestra at Dachau, and Hans Krása — composer of the children’s opera Brundibár — get respectful supporting roles...Yet as Goodman moves beyond the factual perimeter of Otto and his family’s fate in the camps, the novel loses its way...It strikes a deeply discordant note at the climax of an otherwise harmonious novel.
