But when a mutilated body is discovered in a Cotswolds house, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary group of opportunist thieves. As Detective Jack Warr investigates, he discovers locals with dark secrets, unearths hidden crimes - and hits countless dead ends.

"Thirty years on from writing Prime Suspect, La Plante is still delivering the goods."

Judas Horse — the title means a decoy — features the now obligatory character with autism, but poor Mathew, a key witness, also suffers from Prader-Willi syndrome. When it comes to writing authentic police procedurals there’s no one better than Lynda La Plante. Squad-room dynamics, dialogue bristling with hostility, superb scene setting and bursts of unexpected action: her many imitators should read and learn. Thirty years on from writing Prime Suspect, La Plante is still delivering the goods.
