Louis de Bernieres is one of our most treasured writers and these stories show his imaginative range and unique storytelling power. De Bernieres' unlikely and unforgettable heroes are found collecting luxury tinned cat-food labels, posting fish to the President, falling in love with dolphin deities and dining with Brazilian street thieves.

"Comedy and whimsy collide in a collection of short stories that sometimes veers towards sentimentality"

The stories in this volume, which have been culled from throughout their author’s career (although, frustratingly, they are undated), work best when they are at their most simple and fable-like. When de Bernières aims for something more complicated, his desire to amuse can become problematic. In a story called “The Turks Are so Wonderful with Children” (he seems to have a fondness for referencing national stereotypes in his titles), a mild-mannered English couple get married and have a son, who proves to be such a monster that even the psychiatrist they take him to pronounces him “evil”.
