A hugely compulsive, dark, stylish and intense novel, simmering with Hitchcockian undertones - for readers of LULLABY, EILEEN or THE LEMON GROVE

"an ephemeral fiction with a hard landing"

In the end, the Hitchcockian thrills of “Looker” prove only skin-deep; the book unmasks itself as a twisted portrait of pain. This voyeur is also a walker, and she joins other malcontent women in fiction who exorcise “the particular dark spike of [their] unrest” with laps around the neighborhood. (“It’s too much, it’s too much,” the protagonist of Lauren Groff’s short story “Ghosts and Empties” screams. Her husband suggests that she “take one more loop.”) In “Looker,” the narrator characterizes walking as “just a way to not feel, after Nathan. Or a different way to feel—because I couldn’t not feel . . . but to feel while moving in a forward direction somehow helped . . . walking pushed the misery along through my body.”
