"a masterclass in how to make the most of a slight subject without overstaying one’s welcome"

Walker is superb at teasing out the family in-jokes hidden in these commercial commissions. Her book unexpectedly turns into a love story when 48-year-old Gill (serially unfaithful to his kind but ill-suited wife Muriel) became besotted with his 22-year-old god-daughter Priscilla Johnston. If that has superficial echoes of the predatory Eric’s menages, Walker’s sympathetic treatment makes us forget them. Johnston was a successful novelist, and a competent artist in her own right; she became his assistant, financial prop and, eventually, wife.
