"these will bring Grecian heat and light to your life, and much more besides."

Serendipitously, an email about these two blissful reissues arrived just as I was finishing Polly Samson's wonderful novel, A Theatre for Dreamers, which was directly inspired by them. In 1951, Australian Clift and her husband George Johnston left post-war London for Greece, settling first on Kalymnos (as described in Mermaid Singing), then on Hydra (Peel Me a Lotus), where they gathered a community of artists and writers, including the then-unknown Leonard Cohen. With forewords by Samson, these will bring Grecian heat and light to your life, and much more besides.
