"this book would make an opera"

Her talent was recognised by Cher and David Bowie. Her records won Grammys. She soon packed stadiums with her act — short skirts and big wigs. Personal happiness came when she married Erwin Bach in 2013. But tragedy lay in wait. Tina, who gave her final performance in 2009, has since been plagued by illnesses and medical treatment: a stroke, stomach cancer and a kidney transplant. Her eldest son committed suicide this summer. If you are a big star, it seems there has to be big suffering. This book would make an opera.

"I’m sure her fans will love it, but it is a pity her style is not as exciting as her life"

Turner comes across as courageous, optimistic, big-hearted and generous... Turner does seem nice from this autobiography, but it is so heavily ghosted that you never get a sense of her real voice. She is “spiritual” (she goes in for Buddhist chanting as well as Chopra), but she also loves fast cars, Armani clothes and elegant decor. One of the many horrors of her marriage to Ike Turner was his appalling flashy taste, whereas she modelled herself on Jackie Kennedy and liked to wear pearls. She has never smoked or used drugs, though Ike took so much cocaine he burnt a hole in his nose... Half of her story is already familiar from her 1986 autobiography, I, Tina. She was born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939, and grew up in Nutbush, Tennessee... The book ends with thanks to Erwin for her kidney, to her doctors for their care and a plea for readers to sign up as organ donors. I’m sure her fans will love it, but it is a pity her style is not as exciting as her life...

"My Love Story is a decent read, but lacks the passion of I, Tina. "

Does that mean My Love Story is a stroll through the sunlit uplands? Not quite. True, there are plenty of anecdotes about her luxurious, designer label lifestyle in her adopted home of Switzerland. And the romantic interest is supplied by the German music executive Erwin Bach, 16 years her junior, who becomes the soul-mate that Ike assuredly never was... My Love Story is a decent read, but lacks the passion of I, Tina. The first-person narrative has a bland, ghost-written quality, whereas the earlier book, which blends contributions from other musicians and witnesses — including Ike — allows people to speak their own salty language... You cannot fail to be moved, though, by Turner’s reflections on her sense of isolation as a child.
