"If you had to name the most important battles in British history, there would be some obvious contenders. But your list would be fatally flawed unless it included the Battle of Brunanburh"

Livingston is a meticulous scholar, but his greatest asset, on display throughout this book, is his boundless optimism. Hope is an essential quality for anyone writing about 10th-century Britain, for the evidence is patchy and ambiguous, and the challenges of interpreting it huge. But Livingston has good cheer in spades, and as he unpacks his arguments it becomes rather infectious.
