"a warm and insightful account of contemporary Mexican culture, politics and everyday life"

Theroux doesn’t downplay the country’s many problems ... but apart from a few tricky encounters with policemen demanding bribes, he is welcomed and helped by everyone he meets... There is a lengthy section on Mexican literature, although Theroux has little time for the Central and South American love of magical realism, a genre that he labels “flapdoodle and farce”. But it is the stories told by the people he meets that stand out. Filled with compassion and wit, this is a warm and insightful account of contemporary Mexican culture, politics and everyday life.
