This compelling book traces the quest for the truth about the Holocaust in Lithuania by two ostensible enemies: Ruta a descendant of the perpetrators, Efraim a descendant of the victims. Focusing on the central role played by ordinary Lithuanians, they expose the efforts of past and current Lithuanian governments to hide these crimes.

"This thought-provoking book, however grim, may yet force a re-evaluation of prejudices"

Curiously, this English edition (not so much a translation of the original as a variant on it, since Zuroff speaks native-level English) also omits these interviews (the testimony can be found in the Washington Holocaust Museum’s Jeff and Toby Herr Oral History Archive). Other omissions are understandable: unlike Lithuanians and Russians, Westerners do not need a ‘Who are the Jews’ primer to tell them that Jews do not drink Christian blood at Passover. But why omit the conversation of a prison chaplain called Baltramonaitis with a condemned Jewish girl?
