"a charming debut that unpacks the pain of moving home"

Penny and the Little Lost Puppy is a touching story that unpacks the pain of moving house for children. To open one of Sutton’s books is to submit to fantasy. Few of us live in this nostalgia-dripping world (also inhabited by the Ahlbergs and Shirley Hughes) where roses grow up the sides of terraced houses with cute dormer windows, apple trees are always ripe with fruit and independent stores with candy-striped awnings line the cobbled streets. Realists will balk but I love it, grateful to escape the litter-blown pavements, fox poo and killer mastiffs — for a bit, at least.
