"(an) absorbing, perpendicular odyssey"

I loved Reynolds' previous travelogue, Slow Road to Brownsville, which charted his road trip along Highway 83 from north to south. In this equally absorbing, perpendicular odyssey, he sets off from Ocean City in Maryland and journeys west to California, travelling on back roads and stopping frequently to take the pulse of Trump's America. Along the way he meets white, black, Hispanic, Asian and native American people, who have views on everything from slavery and Indian reservations to fracking, forest fires, baseball, beer, the blues and Butch Cassidy.
