"A memoir of a descent into drug abuse explores a hidden side of America’s opioid crisis"

The first half of Smacked has little to do with addiction; it tells the story of Zimmerman’s marriage. A certain type of memoirist would have gussied up these chapters, exaggerating the strength of their union, the better to emphasise what was lost. Zimmerman is too honest to do that. As she tells it, their relationship was always pretty desultory. Peter’s proposal contained the immortal line: “Why don’t we get married, and then you will have health insurance?” He turned up to their wedding ceremony — over brunch at a hotel — in a leather jacket. (“He’s wearing a tie”, his bride-to-be proffered in his defence to her mother.)
