"This is a powerfully written and beautifully illustrated account of the Arab conquests of the 7th and 8th centuries"

This book delivers drama through sublime writing, but mainly through marvellous images. It’s the most beautiful book I’ve read in a very long time. Superbly reproduced photos are embedded in the text, instead of being crammed into a plate section. Images stir the imagination when mere words cannot. The Arab Conquests resembles a travel book; the reader travelling through space and time. One perfect photo shows present day Bedouin tribesmen in a camel caravan crossing the Jordanian desert. It’s easy to imagine an identical scene 1,400 years ago. The timeless quality of Islamic history is instantly driven home.
