"Ross Edgley ... is much more than another of those steely-eyed men with beards glowering at you from book covers."

But besides the science — and some quite technical training and diet charts — at the heart of this book is a wonderfully inspiring and moving story. Edgley is clearly a likeable and funny man, with a good line in blokey humour. There’s some jolly banter about various bodily functions which can go wrong in a wet suit being battered by the seas; his escort boat skipper, Captain Matt, tries to buy a gimp mask from a Scottish sex shop to protect Edgley’s face from the jellyfish stings (he can’t, Scotland’s not like that); and food, and more food. Thousands of calories of the stuff every day.
