"it is not for the most part a new story, but he tells it well"

The Bomb brings the story up to date. Now that so much information is available, it is not for the most part a new story, but he tells it well. And some things are unchanged. Governments have yet to come up with anything more sophisticated than Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD): however many weapons you throw at me, I will still have enough to destroy you utterly. The Russians now say that they, if necessary, will use nuclear weapons first to prevent defeat. That differs little from Nato’s cold war threat — not yet abandoned — to use them against an overwhelming attack by superior Russian conventional forces.
