"begins with a hurricane... and ends with a whirlwind of hectic action and ghastly revelations "

The humour — also shared in Bones, the TV series based on the character — is vital to offset the litany of horrors that Tempe uncovers as she investigates death masks, vaccines and a bacterial pathogen (Capnocytophaga canimorsus) found in the saliva of healthy cats and dogs: “Online images of mottled and swollen limbs, inflamed eyes, blackened digits, and pus-oozing abscesses confirmed that the capno organism is a supremely nasty little bugger.” All right, Fido? As ever, the sci-speak can get a bit much — “delayed bone age, clinodactyly, and fifth middle or distal phalangeal hypoplasia have been reported as suggestive of the syndrome” — but few crime writers are as edifying and terrifying as Reichs. She never lets you forget that “folk do the damnedest things”.
