"It’s all highly entertaining, if occasionally preposterous."

The plot’s twists and reversals involve murky pasts, school bullies, detached parents, rich TV producers, sinister security consultants, fake internet news and a politician reminiscent of Steve Bannon. It’s all highly entertaining, if occasionally preposterous.

"t only properly gets going in the novel’s second half"

Although Coben — who created the Netflix series The Stranger — handles this plot with his usual proficiency, it only properly gets going in the novel’s second half, with the first devoted to building the characters of the two misfits leading the search: semi-feral Wilde, who lives off-grid, and Hester, a spiky senior attorney and TV host. Possibly what underlies the protracted warm-up is a plan to make them a regular double act; but whatever the explanation, the light, leisurely mood of the first 200 pages makes it hard to be engaged fully by the abduction storyline.
