When Semira discovers a diary written by Hen, a girl living over 100 years ago, she finds the friend she has been desperately seeking. A friend who brings not just comfort, but inspiration to be brave, to fight for her place in the world, and maybe even to uncover the secrets of her own past. . .

"Gill Lewis uses a neat, if rather unlikely idea to tell two stories of female empowerment"

Gill Lewis uses a neat, if rather unlikely idea to tell two stories of female empowerment, a century apart... One of the challenges of a dual narrative is that each voice must grip. Lewis doesn’t quite achieve that; I was hooked by Semira’s tale and could have read far more about the modern girl whose story forces the reader to think outside their own small world.
