Down-to-earth detective DCI Vera Stanhope is driving home in a blizzard when she finds an abandoned car in Cleeves’s latest novel. There’s a toddler strapped inside and Vera stumbles into the snow with the child in her arms, in search of shelter. She ends up at the dilapidated stately home where her father grew up, and her estranged relatives come under suspicion when the body of the child’s mother is found nearby.

After Vera takes the child to a nearby stately home for shelter, the mystery deepens in true Cleeves style.
