"Her entertaining new book is lighter, but also promotes kindness and dips a toe into the subject of family discord"

Thompson’s last book, The Light Jar, has been included in the EmpathyLab’s selection of 30 children’s books to encourage compassion in young readers. Her entertaining new book is lighter, but also promotes kindness and dips a toe into the subject of family discord.

It is told by trouble-maker Maxwell... On a day when everything goes wrong for Maxwell, he wishes, like George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life, that he’d never been born, and a strange object in an elderly neighbour’s house seems to grant his wish. He finds out what becomes of his family, best friend and school without him, discovers that he has nudged people in happier directions, and that, even for him, life can be wonderful.
