"it stands comparison with the early works of Sarah Waters and Barbara Vine."

The creator of a podcast called The Distant Dead is murdered in Tewkesbury Abbey where Stella Darnell, a detective’s daughter and cleaner extraordinaire, has been flicking her duster... Lesley Thomson can make your flesh creep at will. Her sense of place, during the Blitz or in the present, is remarkable. This is her best novel to date; it is not only a complex mystery, full of strange characters — many of whom meet at a talking-shop called the Death Café — but also a sensitive exploration of grief. Regardless of the rather cosy conclusion, it stands comparison with the early works of Sarah Waters and Barbara Vine.
