"a gripping and affecting read"

The mechanics behind the swap are contrived and overly reliant on coincidence, but aren’t what drive this story. The novel’s momentum comes instead from the characters’ new circumstances, especially those of Claire, a high-society politician’s wife plunged into an underworld hovering on the edges of a university campus, trying to unravel the complicated past of the woman whose shoes she has stepped into. Both protagonists are smart, underestimated women desperately trying to take control of their lives, and Julie Clark’s deft characterisation and expert suspense-building ensure we are glued to their interlocking fates.
