"Ouloo’s restaurant at the back-end of the universe has acquired some charming guests, but strip away their backstories and boy, do this lot need a plot"

Not so much science fiction, more a cos-play retread of John Hughes’ film The Breakfast Club, the final instalment of Becky Chambers’ Wayfarersseries perfectly encapsulates the genre’s current polarisation. Younger readers will lap up the subtleties involved as friendships develop between Ouloo’s stranded guests: Roveg, a Quelin; Pei, an Aeluon, and an Akarak called Speaker. They’ll appreciate the breadth of imaginative sympathy that gives these characters, not only disadvantages relative to each other (Speaker is the only methane breather; Pei has no sense of hearing) but also individual challenges (Speaker is paraplegic; her sister, stranded in orbit, is asthmatic).
